The Grey Linen Dress or is it Black and White?

This is the linen dress. I think I just answered my question and the fabric is black and grey. I really like it. There is a bit of rayon in it, just enough to give it a softer drape and not so many wrinkles. I did line the top with some grey Ambiance I found in the closet. This is a summer dress for work. It is very warm where I work so I did not line the skirt. I will wear a slip if I need to but I don't think I will. I am still not sure what to do about the sleeves. Puffy or Angel sleeves? Remember, I hate my arms. The angel sleeve would soften the look and be more flattering. Drawback? The dress will look like a muu muu. Puffy sleeve? Maybe if I don't have the elastic tight so it is not squeezing my upper arm. I will make this decision last, once the skirt is on. Maybe once the skirt is on with the belts and empire waist it won't be so muu muu like. So the sleeve finish will be last.

Are you ready for the back? I did an invisible zipper. I am really pleased with the results and how the print matched up. I truly never expected it to come out that well. Don't you love invisible zippers?

The sleeve seams and neck band are topstitched but it doesn't even show. The thread just imbeds  right into the fabric.

DH and I will be heading South this weekend for a long weekend in the Cape and Boston area. I cannot wait to see my babes. I miss them terribly. We will be visiting his Mom as well. Hopefully the dress will be done by the weekend.....Bunny

  2. Great zipper. I did my best ever invisible zipper, even while matching checks, over the weekend.
I love your fabric - the roses are girly, but the colour is sedate.

  5. Very, very pretty. I do love invisable zippers, just started using them again and they are such a big improvement over the old ones.

  7. OMG - I LOVE that zipper - and yes, I love invisible zips - they are the best, cause they show your matching to the nth degree!!! Maybe if you could add a fitted (wider at top, smaller at bottom) waist band piece that would "contain" it enough to prevent a muu-muu look, or maybe an obi type sash. I loved those muu-muus but you're right they do sort of flow everywhere.

  9. You did a wonderful invisible zipper - great matching of the fabric! I think you are making a wise decision by waiting on the sleeves.

  10. This is so pretty. I recently bought a linen top that is not lined. I love it, but it wrinkles sooooo badly. Would lining it help? What kind of fabric would I line it with. I'm not sure how easy it would be to line, but I think I could do it.
Your zipper and matching fabric is amazing!

  11. With such beautiful fabric that dress will definitely NOT look like a mumu, especially on your cute figure. I have the pattern and I didn't even think about the mumu look. Maybe I'd better wait until I lose a few more pounds to sew this one up.

  12. That will be a lovely dress. What a pretty print. You did a great job on the zip. Interesting that regardless of how many years of sewing experience we havem we're always surprised when a technique goes so well! I guess that experience teaches us that nothing is absolute!

  13. I really like the dress. I don't like my arms either, so I'd probably wait to see how the rest looks before finihsing them.

  15. South? I thought you were coming to see me in South Carolina and then I find out "south" is the Cape and Boston area! SNORT!

Love the dress as usual and I just bought a cotton print that is similar. I am working up so trying to insert a zipper. My take on elastic sleeves, especially short sleeves, is that they only for kids. Has something to do with all the puffy sleeved dresses I wore as a child I'm sure. I think your sleeves just need a hem and left open. But I'm new at this so I'll check back. You'll do something great I'm sure :)
