Sewing Vloggers

I finally found tiny vibrantly colored buttons for Carly's Bishop. Last week there was no such thing at Joann's. This week they had them. Only one problema:

When steam from the iron hit them the color disappeared and they kind of melted. So I cut out all the damaged buttons and resewed the fresh ones on the dress with a pledge to dry clean this baby. Worse case I remove and reattach the buttons.

Gotta tell ya', the buttons make this design. It really popped once they were applied so I don't want to change the design direction by not doing them. There will also be buttons all over the coat to go with this. Oy..... I did get the cuffs done. They have the double piping and plaid cuffs. It is really coming out cute. I managed to get the growth tuck done on the hem as well. So, we are close, very close.

I will leave you with an apron Ima gave me, one her sister made for her. It has ONE snap at the waistline seam and a loop of fabric you can see that has both ends sewn into the waistline. Wonder what those were for. The dark grey area is a deep divided pocket and the front has large cross stitching in sewing motifs that her sister did. I just love it. My favorite part is the tape measure at the hemline.

  1. The loop of fabric could be to tuck a dish towel into, so that it's handy.

  7. Love the apron.

Ermmm. What is a bishop? I guess I could Google, but it seems like I'd get a lot of religious links.

  9. Okay, I'm going downstairs TODAY to do a test steaming on a package of brightly colored buttons I just bought at JoAnns. I have visions of re-creating one of Gail Doane's jackets & would hate to have the buttons ruined after all that work.

The bishop is turning out so darn cute, Bunny! I can't wait to see photos of it on Carly. :D

  10. Bishop dresses are little girl dresses that are generally gathered around the neckline, usually with smocking but not necessarily, and the fullness flows out from there. The only fit issue is the neckline and length as they are usually VERY FULL. I make mine with one width of fabric for the front and another for the back. Little girls look just darling in them and because of the fullness can often get 2 or 3 years of wear from them. To see more bishops go here: http://images.google.com/images?q=smocked%20bishop%20dresses&oe=utf-8&rls=com.google:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi or just google smocked bishop dresses in IMAGES on google.

    Yeah, that apron is great!

  11. I bought Gail's book a week or two ago, and it's as wonderful as I expected it to be. Which jacket are making? I assume the swing jacket with the heart embroidery? I was doing a little preliminary shopping for those buttons at JoAnnes as well, and couldn't really find anything either. I was thinking I was going to have to find something online. I'm thinking I might make the bishop with the bunny jacket, but I really don't have anyone to make it for. I'll probably do it for the church bazaar, next year, as this year's is only a couple weeks away, and I'm making dd an "involved" Halloween costume.

  12. I can't wait to see the bishop dress. I bet it will be gorgeous, as all your work!

The apron is really cute. I think the loop is for tucking in a towel or cloth, to dry your hands while working in the kitchen. Very nice!

  13. The project is looking very good. I've had a couple button 'meltdowns' as well. I have found the Teeny Weeny size hand dyed buttons from www.hillcreekdesigns.com are better than the ones I can find at my local JoAnns. I have learned, the hard way, to iron things with buttons all over them either from the wrong side or with a press cloth. That seems to save even the JoAnn buttons. Can't wait to see everything finished.
