Simp 2153, Muslin # 1

Well, I guess this nightmare picture says it all! How do you like the hat? I thought it was  great over compensation for a day of no makeup and bad hair. I picked it up in a compulsive moment last week in Lake Placid. I like it, wondered where I would wear it, and now I know - Muslin Display! Back to 2153.....

This pic gives you a better idea of the issues. The ease on this jacket  is 40 1/2 inches at the bust.  I plan for this to be a spring- fall jacket, going the most over a tee or shirt and jeans. It also meets with a zip at center front so that is why I have it a bit separated. I have only been close to a 40 1/2 inch bust in my ninth month of pregnancy so this has to be narrowed. But the really big issue is the horrendous sleeve. It is way too low and way too wide being almost 18 inches wide at the bicep. You combine that with a voluminous shiny fabric and we are talking nightmare on Elm Street. FWIW, this is sewn as out of the envelope in the smallest size, a 6.

That right shoulder dip rears it's ugly head with every garment, doesn't it? That's an easy fix with a shoulder pad. Here you can see all the width above the waist. I know I have to have extra ease in a jacket but this could be way  better than this. Sorry about the bunched up tee on my butt.  So now what do I do? Your suggestions and positive critique are very welcome. I'm thinking deal with that stinkin' sleeve first. How about first I take in under the arm as well as narrow up the sleeve width to match? Then I will raise the armscye as well. I'll also petite the upper chest and back and sleeve head area. After Muslin #2with all the petiting it will then be time for narrowing the shoulders and upper bodice. I have to also decide in which order to do all of this, hmmm,,,,,,,,

I've given a lot of thought to the lining process in this garment. I am going to flatline  it and do facings. This pattern required that I make a facing for the back neck as there is none provided. Instead the collar eats up the back bodice neckline. I've never liked that technique. I also may do some sort of binding on the facing as well. More to come on the lining process.

If I am looking a bit worse for wear lately I have been dealing with the return of near daily migraines the likes of which I haven't seen in years. I will be seeing the Dr. about all this and may just need a prescription. Hopefully there is something new and improved since I took migraine meds like Imitrex and Relpax years ago.  I thought I was all through with this issue but apparently something is flipping the migraine trigger.  I do know one thing. If I can get myself in the Zone, as in creative endeavors where I just lose track of time, it greatly improves the situation. So I sew on........................Bunny

  1. Sorry I can't help with the alterations and looking forward to suggestions from commenters. I recently got over a bout of migraine headaches and in the past was prescribed imitrex. I was informed that imitrex and my age (50) does not work as it used to and was prescribed fioricet. Took one pill and an hour later it alleviated my sensitivity to light, noise, nausea & then the pain was gone. I felt like a brand new person.

  3. Bunny, I feel for you, I am a migrane sufferer as well. I'm currently receiving Botox injections for the migraines. It helps a lot, but I still get the occasional bad one, like today. I hope you find relief soon.

    1. That is something I have been wondering about. I'll find out more from my upcoming visit.

    2. Bunny, just wanted to add a couple things. I have suffered with migraines since I was a young girl. If there is a medicine out there for migraine, I've tried it. The combo I like the most currently is Zomig Nasal Spray, since it bypasses the stomach and gets in the bloodstream quickly, and Zofran dissolving tablets for the nausea that comes with the headache. The Botox injections have been an incredible blessing, truly life changing. I still get migraines, which I treat with the Zomig, but they are no longer so severe that they are untreatable. Hope you are feeling better soon.

  4. Migraines are the worst. I get them rarely, and have learned what to do the minute my vision goes wonky. A big dose of Excedrin or Tylenol & Caffeine, then I go to bed and shut out the world. Last time, I was back on my feet an hour later as opposed to 3. Sorry I can't help with fixes for the jacket! :(

  5. You are the third person in 2 days who I've heard say that they are having unusual migraines like they haven't in years or it's not the normal time they get them. All in the Northeast, too. I wonder if there is some kind of barometric pressure or allergy bloom to blame? Feel better!

  6. Oh, Bunny, I'm so sorry to hear that your migraines have returned! I'll be praying that your doctors can find relief for you ASAP. Regretfully, I have no comment on the alterations for your jacket. I'm just here to read and learn. :)

  7. Hi Bunny,
I'm sorry to read about the migraines. I get them too, although not as badly as I used to. I'm down to a couple of episodes a year. Acupuncture has been very helpful, as have dietary changes recommended by my acupuncturist. I think the most helpful of the dietary changes she recommended was to give up milk. It took a while to get used to black tea again, but it's okay!

I hope you're able to find a solution quickly Bunny!

  8. I have never suffered with migraines, only really bad headaches and that is bad enough, so I really feel for you - hope you find your solutions soon.

If anyone can sort out your Simp 2153 its you - strange how they design some of these patterns. Cute hat too.

    1. I'm going to take some time today and go back and re read the reviews on PR and look at the photos really closely. I am glad I have one sleeve undone.I will use that side to rework some issues before cutting a new muz.

  9. I read this review: http://sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/70475 and understand that this is supposed to be baggy and roomy. But you are smaller than a size 6 so almost every adjustment for petites will have to be done front and back. The one thing she mentions is that it is snug on the hips so they got that part right...or did they? If you could pin a horizontal tuck across the chest somewhere between the bust points and neckline...what can we call that line...say 1 inch...and the same for the back at that level...like mid armscye across, that will lift the armhole. The same line is used for the sleeve...same tuck. Then do the vertical tucks down the center of each front panel and the back but don't use the center back fold area...use vertical tucks where the princess seams would be if it had any. That should bring the muslin into some kind of better shape and shorten the jacket 2 inch as well if you need it. Pin out a vertical tuck down the center fold of the sleeve until you are happy. I'm sure you have a simpler way of doing this as your usual techniques but as an observer this is the way I'd do it for a client without disturbing the basic shape and it does not require much messing with facings and curves too much...fingers crossed! As for migraines, thank God I have never had one but I know so many people who do and I wish you all the good luck in the world to find something or someone who can give you some relief!

    1. I was going in this direction. This pattern has not gotten my usual "petiting" so that should help. Thanks for your advice. As always, greatly appreciated.

  10. What great advice from mrsmole! I hope the alterations work out easily for you, as you surely don't need another stressor in your life right now.

I pray you can get some relief from the migraines, Bunny. My sister suffers with them & still gets relief with Imitrex, at the age of 60. I'm wondering if hay fever season isn't a factor? DH says it starts mid Aug. I've had to take a Zyrtec every day!

    Hugs,
    Rett

p.s. I think the hat is CUTE on you!

    1. Mrs. Mole is such an expert so I will definitely listen. As far as the migraines, I am wondering the same. They seem to really roar when I am outside. I think it may be time to just shut all the windows and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the advice, Nurse Wett, ;0 .

  11. Please forgive me for just throwing in here. I've read your blog for some time, and really enjoy it. :) I have nothing to add re: your muslin adjustments, but would like to share with you what I use for migraines. My doc prescribed Sumavel DosePro injections. They don't have a needle, but get the medicine in under the skin with compressed air. I'm not going to lie...they hurt. You may need to get your husband to do it so you don't flinch. But it's only a second or two of pain, and then my migraine is gone in about 15 minutes. Your mileage may vary, of course. But for me, the relief comes lightening fast.

I hope you don't mind my offering an option. Whatever route you take, I hope you begin feeling better soon. There's nothing like chronic pain to wear you down. :(

    1. I will definitely keep your suggestion in mind. I have lots to discuss with the doctor on my visit. Thanks everyone for all the input. I am sorry you've had to deal with the chronic pain of it all as well and am glad you've found some respite. Thanks so much.

  12. Bunny, I don't envy you the challenges of making this jacket. But, your headaches concern me; my daughter had almost debilitating headaches and Topamax was prescribed for her; while not completely migraine free, it has reduced them by probably 95%. As I understand it there are few side effects with this medication. Sending you a hug, Chere
