Two tops today! Simp 1463 and Vogue 8636

Two knit tops got finished this week and I've learned a lot now that they are done. That ease thing is tricky. In both of these tops I "petited" the pattern, reducing length between the apex and shoulder. Now that I see the photos I am thinking not necessary. When I make these next, I will not "petite". It appears to give me negative ease around the upper bodice and wearing ease going down. I think it should be one or the other and since I am not a big fan of negative ease for myself I will make the pattern with no adjustments. I did not do a full bust adjustment on either of these. Next time I will do a small one so that things will fall a little better. Other than that I really like these tops, find them comforable, and consider them definitely wearable and at the beginning of my knit learning curve. Any comments are appreciated. I will do two separate posts about the pattern construction.

I like the look of this draped back which you can only find in the tech drawings on the pattern. There was an issue and that will come with the review. This was view B.

This is the Marcy Tilton tee shirt pattern. I really like it but it also did not need to be "petited" in hindsight. The fabric shows everything and you can see how my bra straps cut in and I don't like that.

All of this is livable but I can do better and hopefully will. But for now I am moving on to some linen pieces. It's muslin time!...Bunny

  1. God job, Bunny! Knits are soooo different from wovens - definitely takes some practice and getting used to. Keep at it, girl!

    1. I'm going to stick with it, Maris. It is such a different skill set when it comes to knit fit.

  2. Both tops are cute. Knits are so forgiving so I find fitting them so much easier. Even they they aren't quite right, they still look pretty darn good!

  3. Bot tops look just as nice with jeans as they will with a skirt. Beautiful knits, your sewing is perfect.

  5. Both tops definitely look cute and wearable. I'm the same as you and don't like negative ease.

The thing that tripped me up the most when I first starts sewing knits was how stretch affected fit. The best tip I can give you is to cut extra wide ss and sleeve seams for fit insurance. Personally I use a 1" sa and baste. If it's tight in the bust, or anywhere else, I've got room to let it out. That helped prevent what could have been many wadders. Every knit's going to fit just a bit differently, even the same fabric in different colors.

  8. Bunny, Both of your tops look darling on you!!! I love wearing knit but hate sewing with it. So I was happy to see what you've done and will be following with interest any future knits you work with. I've been wondering if my choice of fabric could have contributed to all of my problems (stretching when I didn't want stretch, etc.). May I ask where you purchased your fabric for these cute tops?

    1. I just saw your request, Linda. All of the knit fabrics I am currently working on and showing on the blog are from Fabric.com. They are ITY knits, some rayon, some poly/lycra.
