Life Happens!

This past week and a half have been challenging. Those of your with aging parents will understand. This past week we put DH's mother in a nursing home. She was diagnosed with advanced dementia and serious diabetic issues. When her daughters picked her up for a doctor's visit she was close to collapse. The doctor immediately put her in the hospital with a severe diabetic low. Two other doctors concurred on the advanced dementia and she was deemed unable to go home, something DH could see but the other sibs were in serious denial. The medical intervention brought reality to all the sibs finally and she is now in a rehab situation then to go to long term care. At this point it is much a relief but as is often the case in large families, much conflict ensued.

Evenings of family  teleconferences have slowed and I may get to take more than a few stitches at  some point  soon. I have half a pocket left to finish hand stitching and then a good press and hire the model. Looks like Friday may be the day. In the meantime,

This is the linen rayon blend I spoke of. It will be made into the similar looking print dress, Butterick 5348, View C. the fabric has a lovely drape and is much lighter than the picture shows. This simple sewing will be nice switch and I am ready to wear something more summery. Who cares if snow is still melting on the ground here? Not me. Part of feeling spring is getting into those colorful, well not in this case, short sleeved airy outfits. Try and stop me from pushing the season! If you sew you've got the power!.........Bunny

  1. Sorry to hear about your MIL and the stressful week that followed. Hang in there, and savor that relaxing time in your sewing space. The dress will be wonderful!

  2. Oh I'm so sorry that your husband's family is going through this. There hasn't been too much disagreement about things with my mom and my inlaws, but it still isn't easy. It is hard to watch our parents become so dependent and helpless.

  3. Oh dear! It is so hard to make that decision, so when the doctor orders it, it does make it a little less guilt inducing. Hopefully she will settle in well.

  4. I know exactly what your family is going through. I had a situation with my own mother several years ago, but am an only child, so the decisioh was mine alone. Now, my MIL is very ill, and needs constant care at 96 years old, and still, no one wants to be the bad guy and put her in a home. She is going to rehab, per her doctor, for a couple of weeks, which is a start.

  5. I know those decisions are never easy, but sometimes it comes down to what is best for the loved one. My prayers are with your family.
I can't wait to see your next creation. You always give your projects that little "Bunny" flair.

  6. I've been in your shoes. Hope that the family come together & use the time left to show love & appreciation of the woman who raised them.

  7. Oh Bunny, I am so sorry that this is happening to your MIL and family. To quote my sweet mama, when she was going through this with my grandparents, "Getting old stinks!"
I will pray for your family for peace, wisdom and comfort. And I will pray that you have some time to get that dress done because I am dying to see it! I love the fabric!

  8. I worked for many years in a nursing home so unfortunately the conflict and guilt was something I saw from families many times. Quite often its the best thing in the end, I dont think alot of people realise how differcult it is to care for an elderly relative 24/7.

Look forward to seeing the finished dress!!

  11. {{HUGS}} to you & Ern both as you travel this bumpy & often unpleasant road. Neither of us have living parents anymore but we've both been there. NOT fun!

Continue to reassure the family it is in the best interest of the patient...the ONLY one that matters!
I'll keep all concerned in my prayers.

  12. I'm right behind you, Bunny. We have family teleconferences ahead about my dad and his assets, his care, etc. Not fun.

  13. I'm so sorry to hear about your MIL. These things do take a lot of out you...and hope you and LT have gotten your parents to do trusts - it is absolutely the best thing your parents can do for you (and you can do for your kids). The day comes when they just can't do anything, and poof - like in one 24 hour time, you have to take over, and this saves the power of attorney or going before a judge to get authority to pay the gas bill or the house bills. It's just tough, but you only get the chance to do this once - at least that's the way I felt, and wanted to do it right the first time - hopefully I did! Good luck
